about
Iraq. Libya. Gaza. Syria. Ukraine. The list goes on and on. Somewhere – everywhere it seems these days – wars are starting and bombs keep falling. Yet the people on the ground are the ones most forgotten.
“The Smaller Deaths” is the first song of a song cycle (from an EP in production) that explores endless state violence and its moral consequences. It’s for the invisible and nameless, the true losers of every conflict. And for those of us at a distance (for now) standing at our windows, watching on our screens, not knowing what to do.
Newmanov Transmission is an art collaborative creating cross-media work relating to human rights and social justice.
lyrics
soon the generals will have their way
and the killing will begin again
the modern kind
distant and televised
how strange it is
to think of movies
how strange it is
instead of slaughter
when the images come
soon politicians will have their say
and the speeches will begin again
the words we've heard
so many times now
bombs falling flashes
missiles skimming suburbs
so much like our own
we don't even notice
we have grown so fat with violence
we need our murder supersized
before we can feel it
how strange it is
to think of movies
how strange it is
instead of slaughter
when the images come
when the smaller deaths
the ones on the ground
the cameras won't see
will never be counted
when the smaller deaths
the ones on the ground
the cameras won't see
will never be counted
when the smaller deaths
the ones on the ground
the cameras won't see...
